Hi Marie,   I like the new dates and I'am interested.I guess they don't want to include 1961?  Thank You,     Dan Schmitz

COMMENTS:
9-11 I'll be marching with the USCG Auxiliary in homage to the New Yorkers lost in the attacks.  I don't think I could possibly enjoy dancing on that day.  Not even at the glamorous Audubon Country Club.  Sorry, Bert Pence.

Please be advised that I decline to be in attendance at the WHS Reunion, because of the dance and drink etc. Grover Blanton

Marie, put me down for a maybe.  We have a number of other things going on at that time.  Thanks,
Bill Mayrose

Nick and I would most likely attend.  The dates are certainly better as I would not have to buy a coat!!!!  I just hope our Kentucky friends will be in town then so we can stay with one of them -- family too so we can see them.  (Yes, I pack a lot into any trip).
Linda Mayer Pearce

Marie,    These date won't work for us either.. We'll be in the Greek Islands and Istanbul.  Buy the way,   how did you  like your Viking River Cruise?  Charlie Smoot

Count us in,  Ben Cundiff

Marie,  We're planning to attend.  Don Gibson

I would more than likely attend an early Sept reunion - Ted Frith

Careda and I are going on a white water raft trip on the Rough River in Oregon on September 20th to September 27 th and will be unable to attend the reunion in September. We would certainly attend the reunion any time in October. Steve Mowry

sounding better and better but......I must still decline !!  You are a sweety to do all this work for the class of '60

03/16/2010, EMAIL FROM JOHN BURT:

Seems like the prospective reunion date may have been moved from shortly before Thanksgiving to sometime in September….maybe not.  September is generally better since it avoids the heavy travel period as you approach Thanksgiving, and, we’re all getting older and cold weather is to be avoided.  If there is any voting on this matter, mine would be cast for September (or early October).

Regards,

John Burt

Unfortunately, I am unable to do this or attend in September because I’ll be in the last month of our regular season which does not end until Monday, October 3rd.  This change of dates to September will not work for me.

Re:  reunion dates, I would agree with those who don't think the weekend before Thanksgiving is a good time.  BUT the committee just has to choose a time it thinks best & hope it will work out for most people - not an easy task!

I have forwarded your comments and everyone's comments and many agree with you - It is all up to the committee - I only signed up to be messenger.  As further developments are announced I will send it.  Thanks for response.  I'm making lots of database corrections.  I will keep you in that loop as well.  Marie V. Sayre.

Marie, good to talk with you.  I'm interested in attending the reunion although due to a conference conflict, I might not get there for the whole thing.  One observation:  I think $150 for a dance is pretty expensive even with dinner.  That cost is likely to deter some from coming.

Be sure to look me up if you get back to Chattanooga.  Best,  Sandy (Sandra Walker Kurtz)

JUDY (DILLON) VOGLER AND GARY VOGLER.  WE ARE DEFINITELY INTERESTED. THANKS,

CALL: Mel Borland -- Maybe - still teaching and may have conflicting ECON meetings; but, interested.

CALL: Joe and Sandra Carter Behr -- Yes -- But; would prefer OCT. dates -- NO on races -- Thinks proximity to Thanksgiving is not good in general costs & availability of air travel - family obligations - weather. Does like Class 1960 only

EMAIL FROM MARIE 8/24/2009

FORGIVE any oversights in my asking for help - I concentrated on those I could recall in Louisville area.  I do not have current e-mail on Linda Miller Dabney - Sherman & Judie Wylie Henderson or Steve Porter.  When I return from my travels , I want to put the pedal to metal on planning 2010 WHS REUNION.  Many are asking me for a date certain.  Those of us who are out of town need to make travel plans.  I suggest one of first two week-ends in October 2010 because I have had requests to avoid June and September.  We need to speak for a convenient hotel room package.  We need to consider activities for FRI (day & evening) - SAT (day & evening) - SUN (brunch)  ... I think some frivolity and some casual and some semi-formal would be a great mix.  If it is priced out separately and price is an issue everyone can pick & choose. I have a collection of suggestions I will share.  I hope we can agree on 5 year reunion intervals and I think it would be good to set the dates!!  2010 -2015 - 2020 - 2025 - 2030 ...  We are looking at this one and 4 more if we are lucky to get us to 75 years ... how many will still be traveling at age 88? age 93?  Hope you will help!

Love,  Marie VanHoose Sayre

EMAIL FROM BERT PENCE, 07/18/2009

John, I'm not aware of any particular date or location.  I think it would be great if we could pick a true destination for the 50th, not Louisville.  Key West is great and cheap to get to, plus there's lots to do there.  Just a thought.

Really sounds like fun.  Don't know if the Sultans are still with us but I do see ads for the Monarchs especially around New Year's and Valentine's Day.  Are you thinking of this for the 50th reunion next year? By the way, has a date been picked for that yet?  Can you believe that if we do this in May we only have 10 more months!  If a date has not been settled on, would voting for a week-end work?  We could pick 1 or 2 week-ends in May and/or in September/October and let everyone interested vote on what they prefer.  If a week-end has already been picked, what is it?

EMAIL FROM BERT PENCE, 7/12/2009

Are all of the Sultans still with us?  I for one, would be willing to cough up some $ to reunite them for a waggener party.  The dress would be the 50s, the attitude that of the teens of the 50s and joy, unmatched.  Think about it folks.  Comments welcome.

Bert Pence class 0' 60.  Love to all.

My niece's wedding reception was at the Derby Museum and it was fantastic. I've also heard great things about the Masonic Home as a venue. I'm really looking forward to this reunion.

I could probably arrange a private tour of Hillerich & Bradsby if people would like that.

Just give me sufficient lead time and how many people we shall have.

had several positive responses to Masonic Home suggestion so I went on line to www.theolmsted.com/  for additional information.  If you check this link most of the info is just their various menu items but the first page and the 3rd page will give info about facility size availability and cost.  Also, someone suggested they'd like Churchill Downs which would be open if the reunion is held the end of May to 1st half of June.  Other ideas might include antiquing either here or in Glendale, KY.  There is also Louisville Slugger museum and the Frazier museum within walking distance of each other and if you go you would pass the Science Center and you can't go wrong with IMAX no matter what's showing.  If they're in town, the River Bats could be of interest along with exploring the Frankfort Avenue corridor.  In fact, on the last Friday of each month there is F.A.T. Friday when you can have free trolley rides and visit crafts, clothing, glass blowing, wine tasting, snacks, etc.  There's not a lot left around here that's the way it was back in '60 but if anyone had an interest, Ten Pin Bowling Alley is still here.

Wondered if there would be any interest in checking into having a lunch/brunch at the Masonic Home as part of the reunion festivities.  It has been renovated/restored into a beautiful retirement community but the dining hall in the center of the campus, now called The Olmsted, has been kept for rentals, i.e. weddings, receptions, parties, silent auctions, etc.  If there is any interest, we could find out if the rental was possible for the week-end picked and what the cost would be.  Also, if there's still a need for committee participants, let me know.

Libby et al.,
The Olmstead is a wonderful choice, much better to stay in the 'hood. It is a great facility, operated by Masterson's. However, for those of us who spent many an hour sweating in the nearby Masonic Home gym and those who came to watch us, the destruction of that gymnasium by turning it into offices and meeting space would be pretty sad. You can still see some of the old floor and some of the concrete bleachers, but it has been completely transformed. That was always regarded as the best basketball floor in the state because of the air cushion underneath. That's why Doc Adams used it for Eastern HS when he was there and Waggener when he transferred. I understand it had no economic value for Masonic Home, so it was a necessity, but a shame anyway. Maybe we could take all the old b'ball players and cheerleaders over and take a sad picture.

I am on your alls e-mail list.   For the 2010 reunion, I offer Churchill
Downs as a venue.  We used it a few years ago and it was great.  Lots of
space etc but familiar.

Email Response from John 03/02/2009
Libby-I would come and am certain of many others.  Problem is getting the Olmstead.  The daytime would be best for a lunch if the evening is already booked..John Aboud

Email Response from Bert 03/02/2009

Haven't heard anything regarding the reunion John.  Maybe you could plug me into the loop.  Thanks, Bert Pence, class of '60

Email Response from Marie 3/3/2009

Libby -
Thanks for the Olmstead suggestion for Reunion 2010 and I have added you to list of 1960 volunteers.

Thanks, I was expecting the school to do something special as well. Please change my home email address to:eturley@windstream.net. I am still working full time but may work something less next year. My wife, Sarah, has retired from teaching. We are expecting two new grandchildren in next seven weeks(both are firsts) giving us five in total. Do you have Wally Adams, Ben Cundiff, Mel Borland, and Rich Stokes on your list of addresses? I can help with some email addresses and would anticipate planning on attending.

 Response from Marie Sayre 2/13/2009

I haven't heard from nor contacted the school as yet... that is a good idea. We may be able to arrange the opening reception and registration at the school. I updated your home e-mail as requested. eturley@windstream.net

I have Wally Adams - Ben Cundiff - Rich Stokes and Mel Borland ... do you need them or were you offering them??  I will work on a list of the names from which I need information. Thanks for your contact.  Marie V. Sayre

TO: Classmates: 1960, 1961 AND 1962

2010 is 50 years since Class of '60 graduated from Waggener High School ... and 49 years for Class of '61... and 48 years for Class of '62.  It is time to set the date for our reunion week-end.  My husband's class has set an early June week-end and Robert Ling has business overseas at that time. "Biggs" Tabler suggested from mid-May before Memorial Day week-end OR in alternative I suggest mid-September thru mid October.

I think we need at least 12 -20 committee members. You can then elect a chairman, a secretary and a treasurer (perhaps one for each class). And, assign FRI "sign-in" and  FRI night - SAT morning - SAT afternoon & SAT night - SUN farewell brunch ...  IF YOU WILL HELP contact me mdvsayre@sbcglobal.net  or mdvsayre12@att.blackberry.net ... we need a hotel central (perhaps Homewood Suites by HILTON Louisville East or HYATT Place Louisville East would negotiate a group rate) - we need an events schedule full of opportunities to mix and visit (and transportation for out-of-towners!) ... please make suggestions ... (perhaps a day with lunch at Churchill Downs or Keeneland - a "50's night" at American Legion - a lunch cruise or dinner/dance cruise Belle of Louisville - a dinner/dance in downtown hotel - a farewell brunch on Sunday) - we need a program of events ... time & place ... with map! - we need a toast master (please make nominations!! ... for starters ... I suggest in alphabetical order ... (Scott Davis - Todd Hoon - Bert Pence - Steve Porter - Bob Sexton - Rod Smith) -

I am working steadily on updating my address and e-mail and phone list. It is constantly in flux....
I have 225 contacts for '60 with 60 unknown and 39 deceased.
And, I have 225 contacts for '61 with 121 unknown and 26 deceased. I have not as yet counted what I have on Class of '62.

I favor a JOINT CLASS REUNION EVENT and would like to see us move to 5 year intervals with other events interspersed. We are not getting any younger and we are thinning in our ranks!!  There is still space on the VIKING Danube River Cruise 4/15-4/29/2009 and I am working with "Sandy" Thomas & Barry Munz on an Atlanta Area Gathering in July 2009 and I really enjoyed the group that gathered in October 2008 at Gilman's Point (RICK'S). Former WHS teacher, Estelle Logsdon Zimlich joined us!!

Looking forward to hearing from all of you!!
Marie VanHoose Sayre '60
