Dear classmates,
Today is victory day -- we have enough
pledges to fulfill our $1,000 gift to the Walker Cunningham
Memorial Scholarship Fund at Waggener Traditional High School.
There are 29 of us on the donor list (see
below) as of today, which equals $725 at $25 each. I am happy to
say that several of us have offered to make up the $275 shortfall,
if need be. However, I have the feeling we're going to get to 40,
maybe even surpass it, and that may not be necessary. We'll see.
I informed the two people at Waggener I've
been working with about our goods news -- Tammy Boutiette, the
school's Youth Service Center Coordinator, and John Kelsey,
athletics director and business teacher. They've let Candance
Conway, the principal, know, and she's very glad to hear of it.
Tammy is going to take the news to the Parent Teacher Student
Association (the group that operates the scholarship program) to
their meeting this Thursday and to a general faculty/staff meeting
next week. Tammy and John are really blown away by the support you
all are showing for this scholarship program.
As an administrative matter, Tammy and
John like the idea of us all sending in our checks this coming
January, so they can collect them all at once and inform me of our
total. I'll get the information to you later about whom to send
it to, etc. I'll remind everyone again several times as we get
closer to January. If you and I haven't discussed a different
amount by email, then you're a $25 donor -- and very, very
appreciated.
Marie VanHoose Sayre, Dick Bedwell, Fidele
Fuller and I have spent the most time on this so far, and I thank
them, and all of you who are participating. I wish we were all
together so I could thank you in person. I think Walker would be
pleased. However, if you can excuse a joke I think he would have
appreciated, I'm guessing Walker would be "all in" to try to
double our donation figure, don't you?
My best,
Bill Bowden '61
